Radiant LivingFamily Care
For families

Resources for families looking into care.

Choosing care for someone you love is often a sudden, confusing decision. These are the places we send families for honest, authoritative information — including the ones that will help you even if Radiant Living turns out not to be the right fit. Everything below is run by the state of Washington or a nonprofit; none of it costs anything to use.

Understanding your options

Long-term care in Washington comes in a few shapes. The right one depends on how much help is needed, the setting a person does best in, and how care will be paid for.

Adult family home

A licensed private residence caring for up to six (sometimes more) people, with caregivers on site around the clock — smaller and more home-like than larger facilities. What DSHS says →

Assisted living & nursing homes

Assisted living communities are larger, with many residents and a full activity calendar. Nursing homes provide continuous skilled nursing for the highest medical needs.

Free help deciding

You do not have to figure this out alone. Washington's Community Living Connections and your local Area Agency on Aging give free, unbiased guidance on options and benefits.

When you visit a home

Questions worth asking any home.

Bring these to every tour — the answers tell you more than a brochure can. A good home will answer all of them plainly.

  • Who is awake and on site overnight, and what is the caregiver-to-resident ratio?
  • What is the base monthly rate, and what causes it to increase?
  • Which specialty care are you licensed and designated for (for example, dementia or mental health)?
  • How are medications stored, given, and overseen — and by whom?
  • What happens if care needs grow? When would a move become necessary?
  • Do you accept Medicaid (Apple Health), and can a private-pay resident stay if they later need it?
  • How, and how often, will you keep our family informed?
  • May we see the home's most recent state inspection results?
  • Can we visit more than once, including unannounced, before deciding?

These are the same questions we invite families to ask us — see our answers on the FAQ.

Paying for care

How families pay for an adult family home.

Most families begin with private pay — a monthly rate set by the home, plus any assessed charges for higher care needs. You can build a planning estimate for Radiant Living with our cost estimator, and see full terms on Pricing & Payment.

Washington Apple Health (Medicaid) can help cover the cost of care for people who qualify financially and need a nursing level of care. Programs such as COPES generally pay for care services but not room and board, and the rules and income limits change year to year — so check current details with the state rather than a third-party site:

Radiant Living holds a DSHS Medicaid contract and considers both private-pay and Medicaid-eligible admissions under our written policy.
